Svaki veliki režiser umiza neophodne rizike. Svaki veliki film uzima neophodne rizike. „Amadeus“ kao ni njegov režiser Miloš Forman nisu ništa drugačiji. Umesto dramaturškog poduhvata tipičnih biografskih filmova gde se predstavljaju rani, dečački dani a potom odrastanje ličnosti, scenarista Peter Shaffer odlučuje da započne Mocartovu priču negde tačno u sredini, i tu leži genijalnost ovog filma.
Film počinje sugestijom mogućnosti da je italijanski kompozitor Antonio Salieri ubio Mocarta (Tom Hulce). On se nalazi u ludnici i ispoveda se svešteniku. Nizom flešbekova u vidu Salierovih sećanja rekonstruiše se priča gde film otvara mogućnosti tumačenja da li je njegova trdnja istinita ili ne. Salieri nije dobar kompozitor, ali je dovoljno dobar da prepozna muzičku genijalnost kada je čuje, te mu to slama srce. On prepoznaje Mocartovu genijalnost i zna sa kakvom lakoćom on komponuje svoja dela te zbog toga svhata da je njegova sopstvena muzika ništa u poređenju sa Mocartovom. Postaje gnevan i ljubomoran i na svakom koraku želi da sabotira mladog virtuoza, ali pred kraj filma ne možemo da ne osetimo sažaljenje za slomljenog i izmučenog starog čoveka.
Jedna od odličnih odluka filma je opredeljenje da se Mocartov lik ne prestavi kao muzički virtuoz neshvaćenog od sredine, koji nosi težinu sveta na svojim leđima zbog svoje genijalnosti, već se film odlučuje upravo za suprotnost - „Amadeusov“ Mocart je bučan, pomalo naivan, smotan i nezreo, skoro dete zarobljeno u telu odraslog muškarca. Mocart je takođe veseljak, ali nesvesno povređuje svoje kolege kompozitore svojom iskrenošću, koji zbog ljubomore postaju njegovi neprijatelji. F. Murray Abraham igra Moacartovog rivala Salieria sa velikom strašću - možemo da osetimo niz emocija koji polako počinju da bukljaju njegovom liku, čoveku koji u isto vreme mrzi Mocarta i priželjkuje njegovu smrt, ali takođe se divi njegovoj virtuoznosti. Kako film odmiče, tako se mi sve više saosećamo sa Salierijem, koji u svakoj sledećoj sceni sve više hoda na tankoj linici ljubavi i mržnje.
Film je razigran poput Morcatove ličnosti, a sastoji se iz izvanredno režiranih i napisanih scena, praćeno više nego odličnom glumom kojima pun život daju detaljni setovi prepuni različitih živahnih kostima. Scene, kao i dijalozi, su pažljivo konstruisane, bez i jedne suvišne rečenice - ili Mocartovim rečima - jedana scena više ili jedna scena manje i cela kompozicija bi uništila harmoniju. Ovako vlada savršena harmonija. Dijalozi i scene se nadovezuju prirodno jedna na drugu i u svakoj od njih mi saznajemo nešto više o likovima. O muzičkoj podlozi filma nema potrebe pričati - Mocartove i Salierijeve kompozicije su osnova ideje filma i one se savršeno uklapaju u ono što se dešava na sceni. Zvezda svake scene je Tom Hulce kao Mocart i njegova interakcija sa likovima njegove žene Constanze (Elizabeth Berridge), njegovog oca i Salierija. Mocart nikad ne može da zadovolji svog religioznog i strogog oca, te ga to podstiče da dođe do uspeha. Njegova žena Constanza je ljupka i predstavlja savršenog partnera - iako voli da spava po ceo dan, ona je ta koja jedina uspeva da urazumi detinjastog Mocarta.
„Amadeus“ je više nego odličan film, on je skoro savršen, emotivan, inteligentan i u isto vreme provokativan, jer postavlja jedno odlično pitanje: da li možemo da naučimo kako da se radujemo tuđoj sreći i uspehu ako mi sami nismo rođeni pod srećnom zvezdom?
